What is the best roofing material for a gazebo?

Types of Gazebo Roofs

A garden gazebo is great addition to your outdoor space, providing an area for both relaxation and social gatherings. One of the most important decisions to make is choosing the most suitable roofing material; with options such as thatch, wood, plastic, and metal available. But, you should consider factors such as longevity, maintenance, and appearance to ensure your gazebo’s aesthetic, and durability.

Thatch Roof

This traditional roofing option is inspired by the original rondavels found in Africa; these native, open-sided structures, were designed for both shade from the sun and as perfect cover from heavy rainfall. Thatch is known for its distinctive appearance and will naturally age and change colour over time.

  • Aesthetic: Offers a unique, tropical look perfect for garden settings.
  • Insulation: Provides excellent insulation properties.
  • Maintenance: Requires no maintenance, in fact it benefits most from being left undisturbed.
  • Longevity: Typically lasts 6-10 years, depending on climate.
  • Best For: Those looking for a distinctive, holiday-like atmosphere in their outdoor space.

At Breeze House we offer traditional South African Cape Reed Thatch and Combination Thatch which consists of a layer of imitation thatch with the natural Cape Reed underneath extending its life expectancy.

Wooden Roof

Wooden roofs provide gazebos with a rustic, natural aesthetic. They can be crafted from various types of wood, such as cedar, pine, and redwood.

  • Aesthetic: Adds a warm, rustic charm to your gazebo.
  • Insulation: Wood has natural insulating properties, keeping the area cooler in summer.
  • Maintenance: Requires maintenance, including staining and/or sealing, to prevent rot and insect damage.
  • Longevity: Typically lasts 20-30 years, depending on the type of wood and climate.
  • Best For: Homeowners wanting an organic aesthetic and are prepared for maintenance.

At Breeze House we offer Canadian Forest cedar as it has many natural beneficial traits, including its own natural oil preservatives which make it resistant to rot and decay; these oils also act as a mild pesticide and are an excellent deterrent to insects which may cause damage to the wood. Our outstanding Canadian Forest cedar is tapered and cut to size by our skilled craftsmen to provide a stunning, seamless finish on our circular roofs; the shingles are mounted onto vertical laths allowing the cedar to breathe naturally and are then attached to a membrane board for further insulation and protection. We guarantee our cedar shingle roof for 30 years against rot and decay.

Tile Roof

A slate tile roof on a gazebo can create a stunning focal point in your outdoor space.

  • Aesthetic: Slate tiles offer a timeless, elegant look that enhances the overall appearance of a gazebo.
  • Maintenance: Once installed, slate requires minimal maintenance, as it is resistant to rot, insects, and decay.
  • Longevity: Slate is one of the most durable roofing materials available and will stand the test of time.
  • Best for: Those looking for a seamless blend in their outdoor setting.

At Breeze House we offer Slate Effect Tiles: these tiles have the traditional appearance of slate but is light enough to sit on your Breeze House with any additional support. Our slate effect tiles also have the added benefit of being able to withstand much more exposure to harsher elements than natural slate.
