September gardening tips

Flowers: jobs for this month

Continue to deadhead bedding and perennial plants to prolong flowering.

Divide herbaceous perennials such as Phlox and Geraniums.  Ensure that the new plants are well watered.

Plant Foxgloves, Wallflowers and Violas, and spring-flowering bulbs

Plant new perennials and evergreens whilst the soil is still warm and there is generally more rainfall so that they will be established before the winter.

Fill any gaps in borders with autumn flowering plants such as Sedum and Chrysanthemums to extend the colour to the end of the season.

Fruit & veg: jobs for this month

Harvest any remaining potatoes to avoid slugs and blight.

Harvest fruit and vegetables for freezing, drying, pickling and storing.
