Reading in your Breeze House
Your Breeze House is great for so many things. You can enjoy long, lazy summer evenings sipping wine with your partner. You can host the best parties amongst your friends and kick back with a BBQ feast. Or, you can simply spend some well-earned ‘me time’ snuggled up on the bench with a nice cuppa and your favourite book.
And it’s reading specifically that we wanted to focus on this week on the blog, as our team have done a little bit of research into why it’s so good for you (despite the fact it’s the perfect way to escape the stresses and strains of modern life and ignore the world for a little while). Of course modern technology is fantastic, but you really can’t match the fabulous feel of a good book, the scent of the pages and the ultimate escape from the digital landscape we live in.
Firstly, whilst using your brain after a busy day at the office may not seem like the top thing you want to do in the evening, your brain is like any other muscle in the body – it needs to be exercised to stay fit and healthy. The more you use it, the more you can help it ward off diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. But not only that, reading actually improves your memory too. As there is so much to remember when reading fiction, for instance (characters, plots, sub-plots, places, back-stories), your brain does a great job at picking it all up right where you left off. And for every memory you create like this, your brain creates a new synapse and strengthens existing ones. This means better short term memory over all and a healthier, more active brain.
Reading can also improve your focus and concentration. In our digitally-crazed world, a 5 minute span can include checking email, checking social media, texting, chatting to co-workers and doing the actual work you need to do. However, when you read, the rest of the world around you falls away as you are absorbed in the story. Try reading for 15-20 minutes before work in the morning, and you’ll be surprised how much easier you find concentrating on the task in hand at the office!
But, one of the best reasons our Breeze House team love reading must be the tranquility it brings. In addition to the relaxation that accompanies reading a good book, it’s possible that the subject you read about can bring about immense inner peace and tranquility. Reading spiritual texts can lower blood pressure and bring about a sense of calm, while reading self-help books has been shown to help people suffering from certain mood disorders and mild mental illnesses.
So, whatever benefits you feel most important to you, be sure to find time to grab that cuppa, curl up inside your Breeze House this summer and get lost in a great read.
